31 DAYS OF HORROR! - Day 5: What is your favourite horror remake?

I'll probably get some flak for this but as that round headed twonk Karl Pilkington would say, 'Not bothered'. I'm going with 'The Hills Have Eyes' from 2006. The plot is very much the same as the 1977 original, in which a family on vacation find themselves stranded out in the middle of the New Mexico desert, who are then relentlessly terrorized by horribly disfigured savages.

What really grabs me about this remake is the level of high impact violence. It's like a punch in the face, it's so horrendous, chaotic and intense that I almost found it too much to handle during my first viewing. The make-up effects are disgusting good; puss dripping from eye sockets, crooked teeth, oversized heads...all those nice things.

I have seen the original which I do very much enjoy and admire, it's a staple of 70s horror. However I did see the remake first so maybe my opinion would be different if it were the other way round. The Hills Have Eyes simply aims to shock you, it's not for the faint hearted.

  1. Quarantine and The Thing come to mind for me

  2. It's weird, I never think of The Thing as a remake even though I have seen the original a number of times; I would have chosen that too. Oh well, I stand by my choice.
